Believe it or not, these earrings were inspired by a pair of doors, but not just any doors. Michelangelo Buonarroti eventually named them The Gates of Paradise because, during the early Renaissance, when Ghiberti made them, they were groundbreaking pieces of art. If you look for Ghiberti's self-portrait on them, you will find these hoops.
